HOPE 01 NPC Quests and Survivors

How survivor jobs fit the extract, stash, and scan loop without inventing quest titles.

NPC Quests and Survivors

HOPE 01 is not only a loot-and-leave sim. Steam’s pitch asks you to explore the Hab Cluster, help survivors, and push toward HAB 01 across a campaign that already lists 50+ quests in Early Access. More quests are explicitly planned on the Roadmap. This page explains how NPC work interacts with extraction, stash, and the fabricator — without inventing a fake quest log of titles the store never published.

The video on this page is a real demo-era gameplay stream useful for pacing: how long a short objective can take, how dark corridors interrupt dialogue momentum, and why a “quick favour” still needs an extract plan. Pair it with Getting Started if the hideout UI still feels hostile, and with Multiple Endings if you are chasing finales rather than fabrics.

What public sources actually say

From Steam and developer materials you can trust:

  • Early Access includes 50+ quests in a completable campaign.
  • The full version plans more quests and endings.
  • Store feature text emphasises helping survivors inside the interconnected Hab Cluster.
  • The demo was a one-to-two-hour slice with a single NPC and a small part of her questline, a tiny labyrinth section, one boss, and one spawn.
  • On a public YouTube comment, the developer described that demo climax in plain language: the demo “ends” if you finish the questline the Kio Girl gives you, which eventually ends in a boss fight — otherwise you can keep exploring the demo rooms and collecting items.

That is the entire named-NPC fact we will use. We will not invent the rest of the cast, step lists, or reward tables.

Survivors are part of the map

NPCs live in the same Metroidvania-style Cluster you loot. That has mechanical consequences:

  • Talking to someone does not pause Manorial or rail timers. How to Extract.
  • A quest item occupies inventory tetris like any other brick or mag. Leave a hole before you accept a courier job.
  • Quest routes can walk you into boss thresholds. Boss Fights is mandatory reading before you treat every door as a closet.
  • Progress on survivor work is campaign progress. Your run bag is still temporary until you extract and stash.

Landmark the room where an NPC lives the same way you landmark Hab Rail. If you cannot find them again after a wipe, the quest is not “broken” — your map notes are. Habits for that live on Hab Cluster Map.

Demo slice versus Early Access roster

The demo taught the shape of quest design: meet a survivor, take a short chain, and discover that the chain can terminate in a boss rather than a vendor handshake. Early Access scales the same idea up to 50+ quests across a much larger labyrinth. Do not assume the demo’s single spawn and tiny wing are a 1:1 tutorial of every EA district.

If you played the demo:

  • Keep the muscle memory: accept work, leave grid space, extract with the objective, return.
  • Drop the overconfidence: room count, enemy density, and quest count all grew.
  • Re-learn extracts and fabric colours on the paid build. Fabricator.

If you never played the demo, you still get the lesson: NPC questlines can end in bosses. Print a kit you can afford to lose before the last door.

Purple rewards and why streams mention them

Public streams have called out purple fabricator / reward markers associated with quest payoffs — as distinct from the everyday scavenger floor trash and the blue “unscanned” dots. Exact UI chrome can move in EA, but the player-facing advice stays stable:

  • Talk to survivors when you are in their wing; do not assume the best prints only come from random crates.
  • Quest rewards that can be scanned should be scanned before you risk them on a revenge run.
  • Purple or otherwise special rewards still die if you miss extract. The colour does not disable the timer.

When in doubt, stash first, celebrate second.

How quests interact with extract, stash, and scan

Use this loop whenever an NPC is involved:

  1. Accept with a plan. Name the extract you will use when the objective is in the bag.
  2. Tick the checklist. Food, light, loaded mag, grid hole for the quest item. Loadout Checklist.
  3. Run the objective like a raid. Darkness, enemies, and side loot still exist. Controls if dodge or flashlight still fight you.
  4. Extract with the objective. Do not “one more room” a story item.
  5. Stash and scan. Park keepers. Learn blueprints. Print ammo and food before the next favour.
  6. Return on a reprintable kit if the next step smells like a boss.

Quests do not replace the fabricator economy; they feed it. Fabrics from quest payoffs still obey public / medical / military separations. Spending the wrong brick colour on a novelty gun the night before a survivor’s hard ask is how campaigns stall.

Quests and endings

Helping survivors is one of the store’s stated levers for multiple endings. That does not mean this wiki can publish “complete every quest for ending A.” It does mean treating the NPC layer as campaign structure:

  • Parking every survivor forever while you only farm military bricks is fighting the design the store advertised.
  • Burning unique quest items on a wipe because you chased a sparkle is also fighting the design.
  • Balancing both — objective first, greed second — is how long playtests reach a first ending in the 50–70 hour band. Multiple Endings.

Practical habits for 50+ quests

  • One active hard quest at a time when you are still learning districts. Soft talk-and-fetch jobs can share a raid; boss-terminated chains should not.
  • Write landmarks, not spoilers. “NPC past the medical signage near the rail” beats a fake quest title.
  • Re-open dialogue after patches. Quests are a named EA tuning target. Flags and difficulty can move. Updates Hub.
  • Report softlocks with evidence. Developer asks for Discord and Steam forum feedback. Include OS, whether you capped FPS, and whether the stuck state was extract, UI, or combat. Links Hub, Troubleshooting.
  • Do not invent wiki quest names. If a guide online lists fifty titles with no footage, treat it as rumour until it matches your client.

Suggested pairing

New scavenger: Beginner Walkthrough → take the first survivor job you are offered → extract → stash.

Mid-campaign: NPC Quests (this page) + Boss Fights + Weapons.

Finale push: Multiple Endings + clean bags only.

The Hab Cluster is full of people who want something. Give it to them only if you can still reach the rail.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How many quests are in HOPE 01 Early Access?

Steam's EA questionnaire lists 50+ quests in the completable build, with more quests planned. This wiki does not invent a titled checklist for all of them.

Who is the Kio Girl?

A developer YouTube comment named the demo's NPC questline that way and said finishing it ends the demo after a boss fight. Treat it as a demo-era nickname, not a full EA cast list.

Do quest items survive death?

Only if you extracted and stashed them. Unextracted run loot is lost. Scan what you can, then leave via How to Extract.

Can a quest lead into a boss?

Yes. The demo questline already terminated in a boss. Prepare with Boss Fights and a clean bag.

Where do quests fit among endings?

Helping survivors is part of the store pitch for multiple endings. See Multiple Endings for spoiler-light finale prep.
