HOPE 01 Armor and Protection Guide
Vests, protection ratings, durability, and the grid-space tradeoff.
HOPE 01 is not a game that frontloads armour as a progression gate. The 70+ weapon roster and extraction stakes mean your first-hour protection decision is not “which legendary vest” but “do I trade a grid hole for any vest at all.” This page covers what protection actually does in the Hab Cluster, when to wear it, and when to treat grid space as the real armour.
Pair this with Weapons for the stat conversation, Early Loadouts for the kit design rules, and How to Extract for why a vest that prevents one hit is worse than an empty grid that lets you extract faster.
What protection does in HOPE 01
Public footage does not show a visible armour bar. What it shows is:
- Vests and armour pieces as equippable items in the inventory grid.
- Damage reduction as an implied stat on better pieces.
- Grid occupation — a vest takes a real rectangle in tetris inventory.
The practical effect is: a vest absorbs one or two extra hits before you need medical supplies. That is not nothing in a boss room. That is also not free in a medical wing where you needed that grid space for bricks.
When armour is worth wearing
Armour makes sense when:
- Boss rooms with known damage. If Boss Fights taught you a specific attack pattern, a vest changes the math on eating one more hit.
- Bureau corridors with armoured guards. The penetration stat on your gun and the damage reduction on a vest are related decisions.
- Medical runs where you already have a fabric route. Grid space is already allocated; a vest fits without forcing a trade.
When to leave the vest in stash
Armour is wrong when:
- Early Loadouts Kit A and Kit B. These kits explicitly leave grid space for fabrics and blues. A vest that forces you to drop a brick is a downgrade.
- Dark rooms with goo mutants. Light is protection. A vest does not help you see the silhouette before the lunge.
- Courier runs with a quest item. The bag is already full. A vest would push the quest object out.
The Loadout Checklist does not have a vest tick box because it is not a default inclusion in a clean kit.
Scanning and reprinting armour
Like guns, armour pieces with blue dots are unscanned. Scan them once to learn the blueprint. The practical value:
- A scanned light vest you can reprint is a boss-kit item you will actually bring.
- An unscanned heavy vest is a trophy that sits in stash until you have grid space you do not need.
Print priority for armour follows the same rule as guns: print the cheapest thing you can afford to lose, not the most impressive thing you found.
Protection versus mobility
The Hab Cluster is a Metroidvania. W jump, S crouch, ladders, and drops are real navigation. A heavy vest that reduces your effective mobility in a boss pit or a dark corridor is not neutral protection. It is a debuff.
The practical test: if the vest changes how you navigate a room, it is not protecting you, it is limiting you. Leave it.
Medical fabrics and healing items
Medical fabrics print medical tools, heals, and certain protection items. The relationship:
- Vest + medical fabrics = you are funding protection from the medical economy.
- No vest + medical bricks = you are funding food and healing for the next run.
Early Access will tune fabric amounts. A vest that cost medical bricks you needed for food is a bad trade. Watch the Updates Hub after patches for fabric economy changes.
The honest protection ranking
- A loaded gun you can shoot. The best protection is the threat that does not reach you.
- Light in the utility slot. Seeing the enemy is better than surviving the first hit.
- Food and water. Hunger does damage over time. A vest does not.
- A scanned vest you can reprint. Boss-kit luxury.
- An unscanned trophy. Stash it, scan it later, print it when you can afford the grid space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does armour actually protect in HOPE 01?
Yes. Vests and armour pieces provide damage reduction, take up grid space, and are worth wearing in boss rooms or Bureau corridors. In early kits, grid space for fabrics usually beats a vest.
Should I wear armour on every run?
No. Early loadouts in Early Loadouts leave grid space intentionally. Only wear a vest when the bag is clean, the route is known, and the vest does not force you to drop fabrics.
What is the best protection in the Hab Cluster?
A loaded gun you can shoot, then light so you see enemies before they lunge, then food so hunger does not deal passive damage. A vest is fourth on that list.
Do I need to scan armour?
Yes. Like guns, blue-dot armour is unscanned. Scan once to add it to your fabricator library. An unscanned vest is a trophy, not a loadout item.
Will patches change armour balance?
Fabric amounts and balance are stated Early Access tuning targets. Check Updates Hub after patches. A vest that felt worth printing may feel different after a fabric economy change.
